WACOR

The Women and Children of Rye Project was partly funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and involved a collaboration of Rye Museum Volunteers working with the Rye Partnership and the local Community to restore and reopen the Women’s Tower, what is believed to be our unique small prison, built to house women and children in separate accommodation from the male prisoners in 1837.

A wide range of activities were held to raise awareness of the Scheme as well as investigate a completely neglected part of Rye’s history – namely how the women and children lived in Rye over the centuries.
