Centuries of history, just off the High Street
Tucked behind Rye’s famous cobbled streets, East Street Museum is the principal collection of Rye Museum Association — a charity that has been preserving the stories of this remarkable medieval town for generations. From the herring fleets to the hop fields, from shipwrights to potters, the museum brings together the everyday lives of the people who made Rye what it is.

The museum is housed in a beautifully repurposed 19th-century bottling plant — a working building transformed into a home for Rye's treasures.

The Old Rye Fire Engine
Built in 1745 and in use for over a century, this extraordinary hand-pumped fire engine is one of the museum’s most beloved objects.

Shipbuilding & Fishing
Rye was once a thriving Cinque Port. Explore the tools, models and stories of the shipwrights and fishermen who shaped the town’s fortunes.

Rye Pottery
A generous collection spanning medieval shards to modern studio pieces — including rare examples of Tunbridgeware made in the region.

Changing Exhibitions
The museum hosts a regular programme of temporary exhibitions exploring different aspects of Rye’s history, culture and connections.

Captain Pugwash
Rye’s own John Ryan created this beloved children’s character. A dedicated display celebrates the books, artwork and television legacy.

Hop Tokens & Rural Life
One of the finest hop token collections in the country, alongside displays on hop picking, agriculture and the rhythms of rural East Sussex.
